AT-1648 Opening of the Vienna International Center - 6 schillings 1979 (Austria) Reverse: |
Under the title, "Vienna International Center", Prof. Otto Zeiller presents the building comples in an image on the stamp, which, situated in the Vienna Danube Park and known during the construction time as the "Vienna International Official Seat and Conference Center", now has become popularly known as the "UNO-City". A new accent has been added to the Vienna silhouette by this construction, which in itself is an interesting architectural solution. It also has a good effect being on the left side of the Danube, as there is no contrast in style with the old historical State Edifices. The buildings which were at the time of the WIG 64 were transforming Vienna do not have enough space for this new European center of the UN, which will be given over ......... |
Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Organization for Industrial Development (UNIDO) and still more offices of the UN will move to Vienna. The entire complex was established with the Republic of Austria covering 65 % of the costs, and the City of Vienna covering 35 % of the costs. There is a symbolic rental payment for the UN of 1 shilling for a lease of 99 years of availability. In the field of stamp collecting it is of special interest, that the UN in this UNO-city is setting up a post office, selling UN stamps in Austrian shillings, which, after the UN Post in New York (Stamps in USA currency), and in Geneva (Stamps in Swiss currency), makes the third sector of the UN Postal System. |
AT-1648 The 10th World Conference of the International Diabetes Federation - 2.5 schillings 1979 (Austria) Reverse: |
When in 1949, doctors and diabetics met together in Brussels for an international symposium for the first time, the story of the founding of the International Diabetic Federation began. Diabetes mellitus is a disease reaching far back in human history, in which the successful fight against it goes back to discoveries of the German researcher Dr. Oscar Minkowski in 1889. The hormone insulin, coming from the stomach's digestive glands was generally used as therapy after 1923 and in the following the researched medicinal advances made further progress. Today we know that along with medicinal treatment, specially regulated nourishment and bodily exercise are also important. The spreading of the ill-ness and the necessity for concentrated treatment at certain moments has brought about numerous groups of doctors and people affected, which stretch over all sections of the earth. Over 60 ............ | national diabetic societiesjoin together in the International Diabetic Federation (IDF). The IDF endeavors to make all medical discoveries known and activities available to diabetics and finally, information is shared with persons educated in practicing health procedures, whereby the IDF remains in close cooperation with the World Health Organization. Diabetics are estimated to comprise 1 to 2 % of the world population. The Austrian Diabetic Society was founded in 1969 and it was at the same time the organizational center of the "Federation of international Danube Symposium on Diabetes Mellitus", a Forum of cooperation in the Danube area, which is also responsible for the Congress if the IDF in Vienna this year. The stamp's picture shows a schematic eye, and in the background of the eye, appearances of the need for the treatment of diabetes which are not yet discovered |
